Can a Healthy Diet Prevent Cataracts?

Age-related cataract is a leading cause of blindness in the world today. Currently, the only treatment for cataracts is surgical removal of the cloudy lens, which typically is then replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) during the cataract surgery.

There are three main types of professional eye care specialist in the eye field. They are the ophthalmologist, the optometrist and the optician. You can read all about their differences here Types of eye professional.

The optometrist is inbetween the opthalmologist and the optician. The optician is akin to the midwife
The optometrist and the optician prescribe and fit eyeglasses while the opthalmologist is a consulting eye surgeon.

The fitting of eyeglasses is a very important part of the eye care business. If your glasses are not fitted and adjusted properly , you may encounter giddiness, fainting spells and headaches.

You can check your eyeglasses by putting them on a flat surface .If you have those conditions and do not know if your glasses are properly aligned or not , pop into your friendly optical outlet and asked them to service the glasses. Too tight or too loose can cause problems to the wearer.

There are people who have ears that are not balanced. One side is higher than the other. They may not be aware of it. There are people whose face or the shape of their head is not normal. They need to have their eyeglasses adjusted accordingly for comfortable wear

Look out for those optical outlets that have been in operation for a long time because they have more experience in adjusting eyeglasses.

Adjusting eyeglasses is an art and you cannot learn everything about this topic from the university but only from the university of hard knocks.

The eyeglass fashion frames are constantly changing and new styles are introduced.

Like every industries or service, there are the good and the bad .Sometimes ,you may get a wrong prescription from a qualified practitioner.

A qualified optometrist or opthalmologist does not mean that he is always correct .He is only human. The customer is always right. It is what the customer wants that is important.

XYZ.co.uk Review
I ordered my glasses from XYZ.co.uk one month ago. First I got broken glasses and second time I am just getting diffrent feed back on my order. I called there and one of them told me that its already have been dispatched and after one week with lots of calls I found that its still in lab but still not sure its true or not. Very depressing situation with them and very untrustworthy coustomer service. I have already spent lots of time, calls and efforts to get my glasses but still its not arrived. First and last experience with XYZ.co.uk and hopefully will prefer to approach some one who exist physically.

Laura1318;-I am sorry for your troubles. Sorry no names as I do not want to be sued. Doing business online has it’s hazards. That is the risk you take. I hope the company will response to your letter favourably.

I happen to be short-sighted with 500 right n 700 left power so that Sunxxx guy tells me. My specs happen to be expensive cause I opt for high density plastic lens with super hard coating (last ones hard, ‘diamond’ coating).

Since am popping over to the Gama area to pick up my Acer Netbook I’ll eyeball his place a bit.

Laura1318; There is the Hi Index lens and thinnest lens , 1.67 which costs about Rm200.00 per pair and depending on the size of your frame will have thinner edges. The normal Hi Index lens is 1.57 .Diamond coated lens are abit thicker even though it is Hi Index.

I heard of him. He is really damn famous and yes his customer base is amazing.

Perhaps it is time for me to try him out.

Does he handle mid to higher cost orders? Usually, my specs costs around RM500 to make.

Laura1318: His customers come from the state of Kedah and Perak too. His shop may not look classy but his business is awesome, more than those famous optical chain stores in those mega malls. He has all ranges of spectacle frames and most of those branded frames to suit your taste. His prices are reasonable and you get good service ,which is why he is so damned famous.

Are you wearing single vision glasses or multifocals? If multifocals, will cost more than Rm500.00 .There are cheaper varieties which may cost less than Rm200 inclusive of an ordinary frame.

laura1318, mind mentioning the address for that guy in penang? Hopefully, you are not referring to Sunxxxx cause the way Mr Ho adjust glasses is total bull… I have to go home and readjust them so they sit comfortably on my face (no rare ears or misaligned lens even though he claims now I can see more clearly).

Laura1318: His shop was formerly known as Penang Optics , situated just behind the Gama Supermarket and opposite the Eastern smelting company . From Komtar ,after the traffic lights to Datuk Keramat road, after passing Gama Supermarket you will see an Indian temple and turn left. He has moved from that location to another street which turn left from the former shop and which lead to the Gama supermarket.Sorry , I do not remember the name of that road.He has also changed the name of his optical shop. I do not know the reason.

Adjusting glasses is a skill and sometimes, it is not easy due to the nature of the frame or the facial or psychological make up of that person. The last resort is to change the frame or adjust according to what the customer decides.

hey guys u can check this one out. its really useful for the opticians.. its a new software..Optifocus is practice management software for optician and optometrist. It has an appointment diary, patient record & recall management and point of sale modules. It aims at making an optician’s practice paperless.

Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight

The majority of eye experts believed it was unlikely to do any permanent damage, but it might make you squint, blink more and have trouble focusing, the researchers said.

How to wear and take out your contacts..

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006041213881

Why do I feel giddy (pening) or uncomfortable with my new spectacle?

When you collect your new spectacle , you may find some discomfort or giddiness after wearing your new glasses for some time. There could be several reasons.

Your eyes will have to adjust to the new spectacle and this process is called ‘accomodation’.It depends on the sensitivity of the individual concerned.

Some people may get dizzy for a while and then get accustomed to the new glasses. Others may have a harder time and may take a longer time to get accustomed to the new glasses. Some people may have the vomit feeling .

You may have to wear your new glasses gradually each day . First day , wear for 1 or 2 hours or until you cannot stand the discomfort.

The next day wear for longer hours. If you still cannot get used to the new glasses, you may have to go back to the optical outlet to recheck your eyes and reduced your powers for comfort wear.

It could be probably , because of the higher power or inaccurate prescriptions which made you uncomfortable .It could also be the frame is not adjusted properly or not in proper or correct fitting mode(senget)

It could be probably because your power is high and you wear a bigger frame which may not allow you to focus properly.

It could be one side is too high power and you cannot focussed properly with both eyes..You need to wear a lower power for the time being to get the eyes slowly adjusted . Your higher power eye needs to slowly adept to the new and clearer visions. You need to balance your visions of both eyes or you will not be able to see and focus properly.

Is the computer or autorefractor testing of eyesight reliable?

How the autorefractor works.

Before the internet age , the eye was tested using an instrument called the phoropter(there is a pix on the right hand side of this page, pls scroll down.), where you peep through two small holes at the eye chart.

These days many optical outlets are modernize and use the autorefractor which scans the eye and gives out the readings. The accuracy of the readings will have to depend on the types of machines used and the conditions of those computers. The reading is mostly used as a starting point in the eye test. The autorefractor is useful when the patient is uncommunicative or uncooperative.

Experienced eye practitioners will only use those readings and will adjust with the trial frame and lenses to get the correct readings. It is not only about 100% clear visions but also about comfort. If the power is too high , you may not feel comfortable and you will feel the strain.

There are cases where the the prescriptions issued by the opthalmologist had to be adjusted lower for comfort wear. One opthalmologist even asked the patient to go to the optical shop and have the prescription adjusted..LOL! These days ,opthalmologist also use the autorefractor to test the eyesight.

Learning how to operate the autorefractor is very simple and it wont take more than a few minutes. Why then do an optometrist has to take a 3 year course? When he graduates after three years, he will also be using the same type of autorefractor to test eyes. In complicated cases, he cannot do much but to send them to the opthalmologist for treatment.

The best optical outlet in Penang is run by a lowly optician who do not have any paper qualifications and not some qualified optometrist from a prestigious oversea university.

You cant find his shop in those megamalls but just in one of those shophouses in a residential part of Georgetown.

You may have to wait 4 to 5 hours just to have your eye test.Sometimes his place is so full of customers, you will have to wait outside. Now , you cannot even wait because he will give you 1 week’s appointment LOL!

I think he is the only optical shop to do that. If you cannot wait, you will have to go to other optical shops. People from neighbouring states like Perak and Kedah too frequent his shop.
