Do You Lend Money To Your Friends ?

Posted on October 24, 2007. Filed under: Financial Issues | Tags: , , , |

A man found the hard truth that generosity and helpfulness to friends does not pay especially when lending money to friends.

Instead of being thankful and appreciated, he had to go to court to claimed back his money from his friend and accused of being an illegal money lender and other unsavoury things.

That’s what you get when you help a friend . When they come to you , they beg and promised many things but after the money is given , you not only will lose your money but also your friend. Not all friends are like that. there are good ones .But in my experience, those good ones are rare and few. If the money is a small sum , no problem , but if it is a large sum than human greed comes into the picture.

It is better not to lend and have a friend, than to lend and lose both. No matter how difficult it is , it is always better to say a big ‘NO’ when friends want to borrow money. If they do not want to be friends with us, then we know who are our true friends. Good riddance !

It would be better to donate to charity than to lend to friends. Friends do not think of you as friends .They think ,you are just a sucker and treat you like one.

Even long term and old friends can change and become predators. It is either their skin or yours. A drowning man will clutch at straws. It is your hard earned money , keep it for your family use and do not throw it away to scoundrels and predators who thinks you can be easily con.

Money has no friends and no face. Never lend to friends or be a guarantor for them. You will have nightmares and regret and lose a good friend too..

Be smart and wise and learn from other people’s mistakes.

Money and friends does not mix.

The Chinese have a famous sayings,” Talk money will lose friendships.”(Kong looi, seet kamcheng!-Hokkien dialect )

A slogan,”Better I am happy you sad than you happy and me sad.”

I get around this problem by never carrying cash around and always using credit card. When someone asks for money, I say I have credit card debt to pay, so I can’t afford it.

Laura1318: That is a very good excuse and you may even have to tell a white lie when you have cash. I will tell them ,’Money I don’t have, but I can treat them to a free meal and thats all .’

If you want someone to leave you alone, lend them money.

I guess I got lucky in that my friends don’t ever ask to borrow money unless they know they have it somewhere else. Like if we’re in Wal-Mart and they want some cookies but don’t have any money with them but know they have a $20 sitting in the room.

Hi cheesetype57,
Thanks for your wonderful post. It is nice to know that you have such sweet friends and trustworthy ones. In my place, one can never take at face value of what comes out of other’s mouth..LOL! They are great inventors of words to trick your money with sob tales or have sympathy for them.

Had th same. Old friend borrowed to pay off his loan for his car. Promised next week but I guess his calander dont have next week.

Hi Melvin,
He got one too many next weeks and yours is somewhere far far down his list..LOL!
One lie begets 100 lies and it becomes the truth after so much repetitions.

Hi Wong,

Your money is like the Titanic at the bottom of the Artic sea.. as cold as ice ..LOL.
Some people need to be pushed and shoved before they can return your money otherwise it will be conveniently forgotten.

Good guys all died liao!..Keke!

Well, I did lend money to my friend but I never ask for return though 😆 If they will pay they will pay on time or anytime, if they won’t pay, push them also no use.
